Amsterdam's cartography

Local craftsmanship in a rapidly transforming area

Amsterdam pilot map.webp

Amsterdam Noord is shaped by the traces of its past industries. The decades of ship-building and heavy industry may be over. But the shoreline neighbourhood of Buiksloterham remains a hub of local makership, cultural expression and a gathering spot for creatives.

As one of the last industrially used areas, Buiksloterham is an important inner-city "loop-closing" neighbourhood where remanufacturing, recovery and recycling of urban waste streams could take place.

Yet, pressing housing needs lead to the conversion of remaining industrial land into residential uses.

Amsterdam's cartographic journey traces the social, economic and ecological pressures of the shoreline neighbourhoods in Noord.
